Look back and reflect on MOCA’s history, past exhibitions, initiatives, programs, and permanent collection, and see how all of these efforts relate to our present offerings and future initiatives. This series is led by MOCA's team of curators.

Today, MOCA Curator Anna Katz features the work of feminist artist Jocye Kozloff. Kozloff is a central member of the Pattern and Decoration movement, and is included in With Pleasure: Pattern and Decoration in American Art 1972–1985. In the early and mid 1970s, Kozloff’s paintings were filled with meticulous patterns sourced from tiled walls, mosaics, blankets, and ceramics that she observed and copied during her travels in Mexico, Spain, Morocco, and Turkey. In the late 1970s, as a response to the criticism that her pattern paintings did not sufficiently break down the hierarchy of art and craft, she made An Interior Decorated (1979), an installation that is recreated in With Pleasure and pictured above. Kozloff abandoned painting and committed herself to public art for the next 20 years, meaningfully decorating communal spaces of everyday life and expanding the accessibility of her art to wider audiences. In the paintings that she has since returned to, cartography is a primary concern.

Check out our Instagram story today, where Kozloff shares a behind the scenes look at what she's working on in quarantine: a large public art installation for a new Federal Courthouse in Greenville, South Carolina.
