Led by Assistant Curator and Manager of Publications Bryan Barcena, MOCA’s Virtual Book Club will provide readings and essays with discussion prompts to create a dialogue and open space for exploration and conversation.
This Sunday, Barcena features the essay, “This Air,” from the Blues for Smoke exhibition catalogue, which has been made digitally available to read from home.

Here are some prompts to consider while reading this essay, thinking about the relationship between different mediums of art:
- How can one discipline (theater, music, dance, poetry) serve as a vehicle for us to understand the work of the visual arts?
- Are there other productive ways to use genres, be they in music or in any of the other arts, as a way to frame discussions regarding the canons and values of art and cultural history?
