Virtual MOCA: Artists at Home

Join us on Instagram for a takeover series featuring a different artist each week. Today, we hand over the account to the legendary Los Angeles-based artist Henry Taylor! Follow us on Instagram to tune in.

About the artist:
Los Angeles artist Henry Taylor (b. 1958, Oxnard, CA) is widely celebrated for paintings of his friends, family members, strangers on the street, athletic stars, and black historical figures. While working as a psychiatric technician in Camarillo from 1984–94, Taylor studied art at Oxnard College and eventually attended CalArts, where he graduated with his BFA in 1995. Deeply receptive to the communities surrounding him, Taylor’s portraits and allegorical tableaux display flashes of familiarity in their seemingly brash compositions, but linger with uncanny details and an abundance of empathy for human tribulation.
