MOCA Store is pleased to present an evening with Ron Regé Jr. and the complete drawings from his graphic novel Halcyon. On view will also be his previous book, The Weaver Festival Phenomenon, in a series of portfolio binders, laid out for attendees to explore. This will be a one-time only presentation, as the drawings will become available for sale by the artist the following day.
The original drawings used to make these books are not usually seen by readers. They act more like artifacts or curiosities. A single project may contain hundreds of drawn pages, often made over a number of years, and frequently sold off piecemeal by the artist.
The 100 or so pages of drawings that were used to make Ron Regé, Jr’s latest book Halcyon (Fantagraphics, 2022) were created in a mostly stream of consciousness fashion during the isolating times of 2020 and 2021. Drawn in black ink on oversize 14x17 in. sheets, they are twice the size of the printed book, which includes art in full color. Created with minimal penciling or corrections, many of the pages could be presented as artworks on their own.
Ron Regé, Jr (b 1969) has been making small, xeroxed, mini-comics since the early 1990’s, and is the author of nine graphic novels and book collections, starting with Skibber Bee~Bye in 2000. He is known for his artistic approach to comics, often ignoring conventions of fiction and storytelling, in an attempt to highlight, or accentuate aspects of the medium that set it apart from other forms of art.
