Conversation and New Publication

MOCA Store Conversation

The MOCA Store is pleased to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the influential book Megahex by hosting a broad-ranging discussion with acclaimed Australian cartoonist Simon Hanselmann. This special event will delve into Hanselmann’s seminal series Megg, Mogg, & Owl, which began as self-published zines and evolved into a New York Times bestselling comics series. Hanselmann has influenced a new wave in the contemporary alternative comics movement, with his work translated into thirteen languages. For this event, Hanselmann has created a brand new publication that will be available first at MOCA.

Hanselmann's hand-painted watercolor comic pages have been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States and Europe, underscoring his distinctive style and unique artistic perspective. This event at MOCA will feature an in-depth conversation between Simon Hanselmann and his long-time comics editor Eric Reynolds, Vice President and Co-Publisher of Fantagraphics. Together, they will trace the evolution of Hanselmann's work, as well as his creative process, and touch on the broader impact of his contributions to the world of contemporary comics.

Simon Hanselmann hails from Tasmania, Australia and now resides with his family in Los Angeles, CA. His bestselling New York Times series Megg, Mogg, & Owl has been translated into thirteen languages, won multiple Eisner Awards and won Best Series at the Angoulême International Comics Festival in 2018. His work has been displayed internationally, including shows at Galerie Martel in Paris and a solo exhibition/installation at the Bellevue Arts Museum. He continues to leave a significant mark on the alternative comics scene with his raw and honest depictions of life's challenges.
