New York–based artist Mickalene Thomas and MOCA Curatorial Assistant Rebecca Matalon engage in conversation on the occasion of Mickalene Thomas: Do I Look Like a Lady? This exhibition of new and recent work expands upon Thomas’s investigations of gender, race, sexuality, and desire, while also highlighting her use of found imagery and collage techniques. Thomas appropriates moving and still images from film, television, and magazines, now all readily accessible on the Internet, creating a kaleidoscopic visual and aural collage of black female comedians, musicians, and actors, including Jackie “Moms” Mabley, Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, Nina Simone, Diana Ross, Millie Jackson, Pam Grier, Whoopie Goldberg, Wanda Sykes, and Mo’Nique.
