In person: Billy Woodberry
Remembering is a political necessity. Billy Woodberry’s newest documentary, And When I Die, I Won’t Stay Dead (2015), is not only a richly hued portrait of important yet overlooked Beat poet Bob Kaufman, but a profound act of reclamation as well. Like Kaufman’s own life and work, Woodberry’s film is cyclical, even musical. Woodberry sketches for us a biography that had been all but obscured by myth, using the cinematic equivalents of runs, changes, and choruses.
