In conjunction with MOCA’s 40th anniversary and the concurrent exhibition The Foundation of the Museum: MOCA’s Collection, join curator and author James Meyer for a lecture and discussion of his recent book, The Art of Return: The Sixties and Contemporary Culture (University of Chicago Press, 2019). Combining art criticism, theory, memoir, and fiction to examine our enduring fascination with the “long sixties,” Meyer draws on a wide range of topics from popular culture and contemporary art including reenactments of civil rights, antiwar, and feminist marches as well as painting, sculpture, photography, literature, and film. Meyer is curator of modern art at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. A book signing with the author will follow the discussion.
Priority tickets are available to MOCA members at any time on the day of the program. Thirty minutes before the program begins tickets will be released to non-members. One ticket per person on a first come, first served basis. Early arrival is recommended.
