This program presents film and video works that employ portraiture in an ode to femme embodiment and its subversive potential to mourn, heal, and evade surveillance. The subjects in these works find themselves between invisibility and hypervisibility; their bodies become landscapes, sites of social and political contention as well as framed geographies. Featured works by Sophia Nahli Allison, Michelle Dizon, Sondra Perry, and Zina Saro-Wiwa use moving portraiture to contend with troubling realities while gesturing toward the triumph of memory and representation.
