In anticipation of her upcoming exhibition, Simone Forti, which opens in January 2023 at MOCA Grand Avenue, the museum presents an evening centered on Simone Forti and her work. Featuring historical pieces alongside recent projects, the program looks to draw attention to the breadth of Forti’s practice which spans six decades and incorporates movement, video, writing, music, drawing, and sculpture.
Opening with stills from Weeding: Simone’s Garden (2019/22) the evening also includes screenings of Solo No. 1 (1974) and A Free Consultation (2016). These three videos, made over a period of more than 40 years, highlight Forti’s continued and evolving commitment to the body, improvisation, and her relationship to animal movement and the natural world.
Faced with the dual challenges of a global pandemic and the realities of aging, Forti's recent work has focused on poetry as a means of processing the impact that isolation and physical limitations have had on her and her creative practice. The program concludes with the first public performance of Forti’s most recent poem, Another Pretty Autumn (2022), read by Forti together with her friend and collaborator, Luke Johnson.
Following the conclusion of the event, MOCA invites visitors to join us for a reception.
