For more than 20 years, Los Angeles-based artist Laura Owens has challenged traditions of painterly abstraction. Emerging at a time when many in the critical establishment viewed painting with skepticism, her early canvases incorporated goofy personal allusions, doodles, and common craft materials. More recently, Owens has charted a dramatic transformation in her work through her use of silkscreen, computer manipulation, digital printing, and material exploration. MOCA Senior Curator Bennett Simpson leads a walkthrough of this comprehensive mid-career survey, guiding the audience through Owens’s evolving practice.
