Focusing on the presentation of the human figure, Los Angeles–based artist Thomas Houseago works in steel, plaster, wood, and bronze to make oversized, raw forms that call to mind modernist sculptural heavyweights like Rodin, Brancusi, and Picasso. As part of MOCA’s Artists on Artists series, Houseago speaks about Max Ernst’s Capricorn (1948–63), an early plaster version of the celebrated sculpture depicting two enthroned figures, now on view at MOCA for the first time since the museum acquired the piece in 1992.
