Combining painting, design, and architecture, Appel’s work blurs the relationship between abstraction and representation, and is known for its references to the cultural and architectural history of Southern California through modern art and architecture. Appel is the third recipient of the Citibank Private Bank Emerging Artist Award, created by MOCA and The Citibank Private Bank.
